Michael wraps up Sochi -- Next up: 2018 Winter Olympics

underneath it, a small laminated plastic flag of the Philippines is
placed squarely on the chest of figure skater Michael Christian
Martinez, the country’s first Winter Olympian in two decades.
The 17-year-old Filipino who trains in Los Angeles and has a Russian coach is also the Philippines lone representative here, making his Olympic debut and becoming the first-ever figure skater to represent any Southeast Asian country.

Michael Christian Martinez began the long road to Sochi in the year 2010 when his family, despite financial odds, brought him to train in Los Angeles, USA. Under several mentors, including famed Russian figure skating trainer, Viktor Kudriyastev, Michael worked tirelessly to prepare himself for his competition stints that started in Austria in 2012, and led to the 2014 events in Russia. With occassional injuries and the costs of sending him to compete abroad, circumstance and luck have conspired, and in 2014, he became the first ever Filipino and Asian figure-skating champion and the first winter Olympian from Southeast Asia to compete at Sochi, Russia. He is the lone delegate of the Philippines in the said event, and he has performed exceptionally, earning praise from world sports commentators, journalists and audiences. He qualifies for the top 24 athletes in the field.
